CPT Book Prep
Sequencing Issue will need to be fixed prior to any medical coding certification exam
The CPT book is a numerically sequenced book but several of the CPT codes are out of order. CPT book does not tell you where the codes are simply. They give you a range of codes or a chart to go find, in order to find the codes. This takes longer than the exam has time for, so you need to start at the beginning of the CPT book and find all the out of sequenced coded marked in Red and write the page numbers down beside each number after you find it. This will be challenging but a necessary evil you need to fix before your exam.
Open & Closed
In your CPT© book, find all the codes that have the word OPEN in them and circle the word OPEN with GREEN color. Then find all the codes with the work CLOSED in them and circle the word CLOSED in ORANGE throughout the CPT© book. This task will help with the CPC® exam!
With & Without
You may want to find a patter of marking differences in CPT codes like noting which codes are without in one way and changing the process for the codes With something as seen in this example.
U & B
Noting all unilateral and bilateral procedures ahead of the exam will help you pass.
One or Two words under CPT codes
Adding one or two words under each CPT code noting what is different in each code will give you the words to search in the questions for the correct answers.
Marking all
Marking all the Report with or Use with and DO NOTs will alert you to tricks that are on the certification exam.
add on CPT procedure codes
When a CPT description has the word EACH in it, then you know it is one of the codes you do not use a 51 modifier with but you use the X2 and so on for multiples. It is a good idea to mark these ahead of time.
Artiery vs Veins Medical coding certification
When a CPT description says it is WITHOUT something, it is a good idea to put one line through the words it is without so you do not skim too fast and think the code includes the item.
Anatomy
Google Anatomy photos in your CPT book but add FUNCTION to the end of your search and swap the search to Images like this. You will find lots of info to add to your anatomy photos in your CPT book.
This will be a great reference tool during your certification exam.
Great way to bone up on anatomy but find a creative way to study without having to memorize anything.
ICD 10 CM Tips
Move the guidelines to the ICD 10 code sections
Sequencing examples for burns, sepsis, poisonings, drug dependence and more can help for reference during the exam.
When sequencing second and third codes in sequencing example, its a great idea to add page numbers back to original and first code selection.
