2024 ICD-10-CM Medical Code Update: A introduction to understanding new codes in ICD-10-CM for 2024

The ICD-10-CM code set update for 2024 introduces 395 new codes, removes 25 existing codes, and revises 22 codes with nine revisions. 2024 ICD-10-CM medical code update



Additionally, there are 131 new headers and four revised headers. While not every section from A to Z is impacted, there are significant changes across the code set. Those looking to obtain a medical coding certification for 2024 will need keep up-to-date on changes. MedicalCodingbyJen has done a list of all the new update changes in this list for you. Certain Infectious and Parasitic Diseases: 2024 ICD-10-CM medical code update

  • Several new codes added for better specificity in identifying known conditions.

  • Notable addition in Chapter 1: A41.54 - Sepsis due to Acinetobacter baumannii

  • New codes may lead to revisions in the index and tabular list within this chapter.

Neoplasms:

  • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an inherited disorder, has one new code.

  • A separate code for benign neoplasms in other parts of the digestive system.

  • Revision in the Table of Neoplasms: D13.9 is now D13.99 for specific body areas.

  • New Z codes for reporting family history of FAP.

  • Added codes for desmoid tumors (D48.11-) and other specified neoplasms of uncertain behavior of connective and other soft tissue (D48.19).

Diseases of Blood:

  • Additions and revisions in this chapter for reporting sickle-cell disorders.

  • New codes for Scwachman-Diamond syndrome (D61.02) and IgG4-related disease (D89.84), along with parenthetical revisions.

Endocrine, Nutritional, and Metabolic Diseases:

  • Autosomal dominant hypocalcemia (ADH) is a genetic disorder of calcium metabolism.

  • Two types of ADH: Type 1 caused by mutations in the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) gene protein and Type 2 caused by mutations in the GNA11 gene.

  • New subcategory with multiple codes to identify individuals with ADH.

  • Several new codes for various lipid storage disorders.

  • New codes for improved reporting of leukodystrophies.

  • One new code for lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 [LAMP2] deficiency (E74.05).

  • New codes for metabolic disorders, including E88.810-E88.819 for insulin resistant metabolic syndrome types A and B, and unspecified insulin resistance.

  • One new code for wasting disease (syndrome) due to an underlying condition (E88.A).

Diseases of the Nervous System:

  • Many new codes and revisions in the tabular list and index for other categories in this chapter.

Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa:

  • New subcategories and codes under H50 Other strabismus for reporting extraocular muscle entrapment.

  • Additional modifications in this chapter include a new subcategory and codes under H36 Retinal disorders for reporting proliferative and non-proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy.

  • New codes added under H54 Blindness and low vision, and H57 Other disorders of eye and adnexa.

Diseases of the Circulatory System:

  • New codes for other hypertension (I1A-) and inappropriate sinus tachycardia (I47.10-I47.19) added in this chapter.

  • Various tabular modifications and code revisions related to the above additions.

Diseases of the Respiratory System:

  • New subcategory and codes to identify bronchiolitis obliterans and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome.

  • New code first and code also notes provided under these codes.

  • Numerous other deletions, additions, and revisions to parenthetical notes in this chapter.

Diseases of the Digestive System:

  • Specific codes added to identify intestinal microbial overgrowth and its subtypes, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO), and small intestinal fungal overgrowth (SIFO).

  • New codes for acute appendicitis (K35.200-K35.211, K35.219), disorders of the retroperitoneum (K68.2-K68.3), short bowel syndrome (SBS) with or without continuity between the short bowel and colon (K90.821-K90.822, K90.829), and intestinal failure (K90.83).

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System:

  • New codes added for improved reporting of age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture and other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture in the pelvis.

Diseases of the Genitourinary System:

  • New codes requested by the Renal Physicians Association for immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), the most common form of glomerulonephropathy.

  • Look for new codes under N02.B for recurrent and persistent immunoglobulin A nephropathy.

  • New codes added for membranous nephropathy (MN) under categories N04 Nephrotic syndrome and N06 Isolated proteinuria with specified morphological lesion.

Pregnancy:

  • New codes created to clarify coding for postpartum acute kidney failure, separating anuria, oliguria, and hepatorenal syndrome complicating the puerperium.

  • New codes (O26.64-) added for reporting intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy with the ability to specify the trimester.

Congenital Malformations:

  • New Q codes and inclusion terms created for clearer identification of Alagille syndrome, a rare genetic disorder primarily affecting the liver and other organs.

  • New codes added to better identify craniosynostosis and specific syndromes like Bardet-Biedl syndrome, Laurence-Moon syndrome, and MED13L syndrome.

  • Q93.52 Phelan-McDermid syndrome added to identify the genetic neurodevelopmental condition with multi-system manifestations.

Symptoms, Signs, and Abnormal Clinical and Lab Findings: 2024 ICD-10-CM medical code update

  • New codes added under R92.3 to identify different types of breast density found on mammographic imaging.

  • New codes for reporting foreign body sensation in various areas of the circulatory and respiratory systems (R09.A-).

  • New code for the diagnosis of a nontraumatic coma due to an underlying condition (R40.2A).

Injury, Poisoning, and Other External Causes:

  • New codes for gadolinium (T56.821-T56.824) added to the Table of Drugs and Chemicals.

  • Some parenthetical notes added and deleted.

External Causes of Morbidity:

  • New category W44 Foreign body entering into or through a natural orifice replaces category T16-T19 for more serious objects inserted where they don't belong.

  • Examples include codes for swallowed button battery (W44.A1) or sharp glass (W44.C1).

Factors Influencing Health Status: 2024 ICD-10-CM medical code update

  • New code for reporting a child welfare exam (Z02.84).

  • Two new codes under Z05.8 for observation and evaluation of newborn for other specified suspected condition ruled out.

  • New code for identifying resistance to carbapenem (Z16.13).

  • New Z22.34- codes for reporting carriers of other specified bacterial diseases.

  • Addition of a new code for acute HIV infection syndrome and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to increase awareness and reduce the burden of HIV disease.

  • New Z codes for coding specificity for family history of adenomatous polyps.

  • New codes for reporting additional social determinants of health, such as a child in custody of a non-relative guardian (Z62.24) and other specified problems related to upbringing (Z62.8-).
