Day 1-2: Introduction to HCPCS

  • Start by familiarizing yourself with the HCPCS code set, including its purpose and organization.

Day 3-5: Understanding HCPCS Level II Codes

  • Spend time getting to know the structure of HCPCS Level II codes.

  • Review the codes for Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) and learn how they are used.

Day 6-8: Learning HCPCS Modifiers

  • Learn about HCPCS modifiers and their purpose.

  • Review the most commonly used modifiers and when to apply them.

Day 9-11: Practicing with HCPCS Codes

  • Practice assigning HCPCS codes to scenarios or cases.

  • Use a reputable HCPCS code book or software for practice. If you are taking an AAPC certification, I recommend the AAPC version as it has added information inside with over 700 pages!

Day 12-14: Understanding HCPCS Coding Guidelines

  • Learn about the official HCPCS coding guidelines and how they apply to different types of services and procedures.

  • Review the guidelines for DMEPOS, drugs, and laboratory services.

Day 15-17: Mastering HCPCS Coding for Specific Services

  • Spend time studying HCPCS codes for specific services, such as chemotherapy administration or diagnostic imaging.

  • Learn about the most common codes used in these areas and any special coding rules or guidelines.
